A Mission Rooted in Compassion

When Lisa Klink began her journey at Rowan University, she did not simply want to become a teacher—she wanted to make a difference in the lives of students who needed support the most. Today, as a Special Education Science Teacher at Schuyler-Colfax Middle School in Wayne, New Jersey, she is doing just that, alongside her certified therapy dog, Thor.

Lisa earned her M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership (2017) and M.A. in Special Education (2019) from Rowan. While completing her graduate studies, she conducted and defended a thesis examining the effectiveness of animal-assisted therapy on the anxiety and school attendance of students with disabilities. Her research has since been viewed and cited internationally, helping guide educators interested in implementing therapy dog programs.

From Research to Real-World Impact

What began as a graduate research project has grown into a life’s mission. Lisa and Thor—her seven-year-old German Shepherd—have partnered for five years to bring comfort, motivation, and emotional support to students and staff.

Thor is not simply a visitor. He is part of the school community. Students who struggle with anxiety often find confidence sitting beside him. Others are motivated to attend school knowing they will see him. Teachers report improved attitudes and stronger engagement among students who interact with him.

In 2024, Lisa became part of the first cohort to earn certification through the Association of Animal-Assisted Intervention Professionals. She also contributed to the textbook Animal-Assisted School Counseling, where Thor appears on the cover and their story is featured as a model of effective practice.

A Community United

One of the most powerful examples of Thor’s impact came during the 2022–2023 school year, when he suffered a sudden spinal injury that left him temporarily paralyzed. The school community rallied together, launching a fundraiser and flooding Lisa with messages, cards, and well-wishes. Their collective support helped fund surgery and therapy, and within weeks, Thor triumphantly returned to school.

The moment revealed something profound: Thor was not simply supporting the school—he was supported by it. Students demonstrated empathy, compassion, and kindness in action. The lesson extended far beyond science class.

Looking Ahead

Lisa’s vision is simple but ambitious: a therapy dog in every school. She believes animal-assisted intervention is not enrichment—it is a powerful tool for belonging, mental health, and academic growth. With growing legislative support in New Jersey and increased professional training opportunities, she sees momentum building.

Through research, advocacy, mentorship, and daily classroom practice, Lisa continues to move education forward—proving that sometimes the most transformative educational innovation begins with four paws and a wagging tail.
