M.A. Higher Education

The M.A. in Higher Education program has two tracks: Administration/Student Affairs and Academic Advising.

Administration/Student Affairs Track
The Administration track is intended to serve individuals employed in a higher education setting who wish to increase their knowledge and skills as well as those who seek an entry level position in a two year or four year college or university. Full-time students in the administration track may complete the program in two years, excluding summers, by following a highly sequenced pattern of course enrollments. Part-time students may also enroll in the administration track and will be advised regarding the sequencing of courses in order to complete the program in four years or less. The administration track is a 36 credit program and includes a culminating seminar/internship sequence (6 credits) in which all students are required to enroll. All students are expected to work closely with the program advisor in determining course selection and the appropriate sequence for course enrollments. All students are also required to complete a major research project or thesis as part of their culminating sequence of courses.

Academic Advising Track
The Academic Advising track is intended for those individuals who wish to increase their knowledge and skills as well as those who seek an entry level position in a two year or four year college or university, specifically in an academic advising role in higher education, whether in an advising center, an academic department or college, or in a tutoring center or other specialized academic setting. As in the administrative track, full-time students in the academic advising track may complete the program in two years, excluding summers, by following a highly sequenced pattern of course enrollments. Part-time students may also enroll in the academic advising track and will be advised regarding the sequencing of courses in order to complete the program in four years or less. The academic advising track is a 36 credit program and includes a culminating seminar/internship sequence (6 credits) in which all students are required to enroll. All students are expected to work closely with the program advisor in determining course selection and the appropriate sequence for course enrollments. All students are also required to complete a major research project or thesis as part of their culminating sequence of courses.

Students in the M.A. in Higher Education program (Administrative and Academic Advising Tracks) are required to prepare and keep a portfolio throughout the duration of the program experience. The portfolio serves as a tool to help faculty observe student progress and learning which is assessed through a Synthesis/Reflective Application Exercise conducted usually at the end of the first year of study but prior to enrolling in the Seminar/Internship in Higher Education Administration I capstone course.

In the capstone experience students must complete a research project on a topic approved by the program advisor. Students in the administration and academic advising tracks are required to complete a two-semester 300 clock-hour clinical experience (150 clock hours each semester) within the courses, Seminar/Internship in Higher Education Administration I and II.
