Biography

Dr. Casey Woodfield is an Associate Professor in the Wellness and Inclusive Services in Education (WISE) Department and Faculty Fellow at the Center for Neurodiversity at Rowan University. She earned her PhD in Special Education and Certificate of Advanced Study in Disability Studies from Syracuse University. Dr. Woodfield’s work centers communication and inclusion as inextricably connected imperatives. Her research explores inclusive education as a vehicle of social justice, with an emphasis on lived experiences of autistic and neurodivergent students who use augmentative and alternative communication. Her scholarship contributes to countering constructed notions of competence and fostering educational and methodological approaches that center and affirm disability and neurodiversity. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on disability as diversity, inclusive education, autism and neurodiversity and disability studies informed research methodology. She has published in journals such as the International Journal of Inclusive Education and Disability & Society, and Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability, and presents regularly at national conferences. In her free time, she enjoys time with family and friends, walks with her dog, and nature photography.
