Biography

Dr. Seltzer’s research interests are rooted in her early career as a high school English teacher of emergent bilingual students in New York City and center on working with teachers both to build on their students’ rich language practices and to grapple with their own ideologies about these students and their ways of languaging. Dr. Seltzer is co-author of the recent book, The Translanguaging Classroom: Leveraging Student Bilingualism for Learning with Ofelia García and Susana Ibarra Johnson and Translanguaging: A CUNY-NYSIEB Guide for Educators with Christina Celic. Her work has been published in several edited volumes as well journals such as Research in the Teaching of English, English Education, and Language, Identity, and Education. Her current research focuses on expanding traditionally English-medium spaces to include the diverse language practices of all students, those viewed as bi-/multilingual and those viewed as monolingual. Dr. Seltzer teaches courses related to bilingual education and ESL methods and culturally sustaining pedagogy. A recent transplant from Queens, NY, Dr. Seltzer enjoys exploring her New Jersey neighborhood with her family.
