What is the Teacher of Reading Endorsement?
P-12 educator majors can add the endorsement to their program to receive the New Jersey Teacher of Reading certificate. Candidates may add the endorsement courses through their elective credits:
- BA in Early Childhood Education and BA in Elementary Education: 9 additional credits
- BA in Subject Matter Education: 18 additional credits
- BA in Literacy Studies (dual major): no additional credits. The Teacher of Reading courses are built into the major. Click this link for more information about this dual major.
What courses are included in the major?
This endorsement includes courses in:
- Phonics and spelling
- Children’s Literature
- Diagnosis of reading difficulties
- Literacy assessments
- Planning instruction specific to a child’s needs
These courses prepare teacher candidates to:
- understand how literacy develops in children
- assess students’ literacy strengths and needs
- use variety of methods to teach literacy
- tailor instruction to individual students
- provide a range of materials and texts for children to read
- teach from a multicultural perspective
Why might I pick this endorsement?
- Receive advanced knowledge and experience teaching reading and writing in preparation for the Prek-6 classroom including:
- Tutor in the Rowan Reading Clinic. Candidates complete two tutoring courses, each 20 hours of 1:1 instruction for a striving K-12 student.
- Interact directly with parents to collaborate on child’s literacy growth.
Is there a Praxis Text requirement?
Yes. Candidates take the Praxis Exam: Teaching Reading K-12 (#5206) with a score of at least 159 to be certified as a Teacher of Reading.
What can I do with a Teacher of Reading Endorsement?
- In many elementary schools, teachers are responsible for certain subjects (Math/Science of ELA/Social Studies). This endorsement would prepare a candidate to be highly qualified to teach the English language arts subject area.
- Candidates are qualified to tutor in any educational setting, profit and non-profit, as well as create their own tutoring service.
