Certificate of Graduate Study in Adapted Physical Activity
The Adapted Physical Activity (APA) Program provides continuing education, professional development, and preparation for national certification in adapted physical activity. This program is for students, professionals, and practitioners, from not only health and physical education but varying fields (personal training, orientation and mobility, special education, physical therapy, and occupational therapy).
Adapted Physical Activity is physical education modified for a person with a disability as it is for a person without one. It emphasizes the importance of physical activity and fitness as well as the development of gross and fine motor skills.
The COGS in APA provides professional and initial teacher candidates with the ability to design physical activity programs for individuals, from birth to 21 years of age, inclusive of early intervention, special education, and related services, designed to meet their individual needs.
This 12-credit program is designed to prepare students for the following exams:
- Adapted Physical Education National Standards Certified Adapted Physical Educator (CAPE) for those with physical education teaching certifications.
- American College of Sports Medicine/ National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability Certified Inclusive Fitness Trainer (CIFT) for students who previously studied exercise science, occupational therapy, or physical therapy, or who have personal training certifications.
- Blaze Sports Certified Adaptive Recreation & Sports Specialist for individuals who have no prior exercise science background, such as students who previously studied special education or orientation and mobility.
