Minor in Education (M805) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Who is eligible for the Education Minor?
    Any matriculated student.
  • If I complete the Education Minor, am I automatically admitted into the major?
No. A student must meet all of the additional benchmark requirements (i.e., GPA, Praxis I, and dual major course requirements).
  • Will a student with an Education Minor be eligible for state certification?
No. In order to be fully certified, you must complete the Education Major, which includes Clinical Practice (student teaching).
  • Will I have to take the Praxis I Exam?
Yes. You will need to pass all three sections of the Praxis I exam by the end of the semester in which you complete Teaching in Learning Communities I.
  • If I only complete the Education Minor, what will appear on my transcript upon graduation?
Your transcript will show that you completed your major and that you completed a Minor in Education.
  • Once in the Major, am I able to transfer between specializations (Early Childhood, Elementary, and Subject-Matter)?
Yes, with certain qualifications. Teaching in Learning Communities II is different for Early Childhood, Elementary, and Subject-Matter Education (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Spanish) students. If you complete this class in one area you may have to retake it in another area. Please note that for the Early Childhood Education Program, Teaching in Learning Communities II and all subsequent education courses are only offered once per year, not once per semester.
  • Will I need to get fingerprinted and go through a background check as an Education Minor student?
Yes. All students must complete this process in order to proceed into Teaching in Learning Communities II.
  • What are the application deadlines for the Education Minor?
    None.
  • When will I find out if I have been accepted into the Minor?
Students will be notified of acceptance after the Minor Application is processed.

Decisions are made by a committee comprising the Chair of the Department of Teacher Education, the Program Coordinator, and the Program Advisor.
