Program Overview

• Dedicated research and teaching sequences in which students learn to become professors and researchers through the instruction and mentorship of established faculty members; and
• Structured opportunities to publish, present at conferences, and contribute to the grant writing process.

Our students are prepared to train future generations of students, contribute meaningfully to academic discourse, and influence policy-making with the intent of providing equitable outcomes for all educational stakeholders.

The program offers students:

• A highly structured mentorship program that prepares students to be professors and researchers. A multi-disciplinary approach to the study of education.
• Intensive teaching and research sequences that ingrain innovative and rigorous andragogic practices and research skills.
• A specific focus on addressing persistent social justice concerns in education.
• Established local and regional partnerships that provide the context for students' learning and research efforts.

Graduates of the program can expect to pursue careers as researchers at the university level in general. More specifically, each concentration has nuanced career outcomes for their particular field. Graduates of the Counselor Education concentration can expect to work as counselor educators at the university level or as supervisors in schools or clinical settings. Graduates of the Higher and Postsecondary Education concentration can pursue careers as academic faculty, researchers, senior college and university administrators, and policy analysts. Graduates of the Literacy Education concentration will be prepared for careers as faculty researchers and teachers in higher education. Graduates of the Special Education concentration will be prepared for leadership roles in research, service, and teaching in higher education in the field of special education. And finally, those in the Urban and Diverse Learning Environments concentration are prepared to serve as faculty, community organizers, policymakers, and youth-focused change agents to understand the contradictions of current urban school systems and meaningfully address the educational and broader socioeconomic disparities that urban communities too often face.
