Dr. Linda Tillman - Visiting Distinguished Professor

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Linda C. Tillman as a Visiting Distinguished Professor for the Spring 25 semester.

Dr. Linda C. Tillman is Professor Emerita of Educational Leadership in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and is currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Tillman is a former public-school educator with high school teaching and administrative experience. Dr. Tillman’s research and scholarship is focused on school leadership, the education of African Americans in K-12, mentoring in higher education, and culturally sensitive research approaches. Dr. Tillman serves on the advisory boards of TheHistoryMakers and the Black Education Research Collective at Teachers College-Columbia University.

Throughout the Spring 2025 semester, Dr. Tillman will lead a series of impactful sessions designed for faculty and doctoral students of the College of Education. Support topics include:

Spring Faculty Retreat - January 2025

Session I - Early Spring

  • Tenure Track: Two sessions designed for tenure track faculty and doctoral students.
  • Areas of Focus
    • Develop a robust research agenda & managing tenure expectations
    • Publishing with & without mentors. Publishing in Journals
    • Developing a national profile
    • Mentoring relationships/professional development opportunities
    • Unpacking the tenure/recontracting promotion process
    • The do’s and don’ts of external letters
    • Engaging DEI-focused research & advancing DEI through teaching; barriers for underrepresented faculty 

Session II - Mid Spring

  • The Path to Full Professor: Two sessions designed for post-tenure faculty
  • Areas of Focus
    • Balancing the tripartite mission of teaching, research and service
    • Juggling responsibilities and continuous research engagement
    • Elevating national research/leadership service profile
    • Unpacking faculty full promotion process
    • Engaging DEI-focused research and advancing DEI through teaching; barriers for underrepresented faculty
    • Pursuing grants as PR or CoPI; strategies for developing a robust TRP dossier (e.g. accomplishments in research teaching and service)
    • The do’s and don’ts of external letters
    • Mentoring for mid-career scholars

Session III - Late Spring

  • For Graduate Students: A session designed for Ph.D. students and Holmes Scholars
  • Areas of Focus
    • Graduate Student to Professoriate
    • Mentor/Mentee Relationship
    • Barriers in Education (i.e. Teaching)
    • Engaging in DEI-focused research and advocating DEI through faculty opportunities
    • Pursuing teaching or Research-emphasis Institutions

CASE Summit - April 2025

    • A one-day conference for College of Education Partnering School Districts and others, featuring a distinguished educator and the research and work of the College of Education faculty & other invited guests.
