Transforming Sterling with a Clear Vision
As Superintendent of Sterling Regional High School District, Matthew Sheehan is focused on making Sterling “a great place to learn, work, and build meaningful relationships.” A double Rowan graduate, Sheehan has led the development and implementation of United Vision 22, a strategic plan designed to strengthen academic rigor, elevate student voice, and build deeper connections with the community.
Redesigning the School Experience
One of the most significant changes under Sheehan’s leadership was the move from a 25-year block schedule to a rotating wheel schedule in September 2024. This bold shift created year-round instruction, midday office hours, and increased access to electives, AP classes, and career and technical education opportunities.
“The new schedule was a huge adjustment after 25 years of block scheduling,” Sheehan explains, “but it’s providing more opportunities and supports for students and teachers than ever before.”
Creating a Distraction-Free Zone
Another major initiative is Sterling’s adoption of the Yondr Pouch, which locks students’ phones during the school day to minimize distractions and encourage face-to-face interaction. The decision followed careful research, including staff professional learning tied to Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation and student visits to schools already using the technology.
The results speak for themselves: “Students are more engaged in their education, are building more relationships, and have enjoyed the distraction-free environment that we have created,” says Sheehan.
Empowering Student and Community Voice
Under United Vision 22, Sterling has introduced a student representative on the Board of Education, formed an equity group, expanded community partnerships, and conducted a feasibility study on regionalizing its three sending districts. Every decision—from budgets to facility upgrades—is guided by the strategic plan’s goal of making Sterling an ideal learning environment.
Family and Future
Sheehan’s commitment to education is personal. Two of his children currently attend Rowan University as education majors and swim program members. His work at Sterling ensures they—and all students—have access to schools that are rigorous, inclusive, and focused on the whole learner.
