Combined Advanced Degree Program (CADP) in Subject Matter Education: English, Social Studies, Spanish, Theatre
The Combined Advanced Degree Program (CADP) in Subject Matter Education for English, Social Studies, Spanish, and Theatre majors offers the unique opportunity for undergraduate Rowan students who desire to pursue a program of study combining a bachelor’s degree (BA) in their discipline, a Master of Science Degree in Teaching (MST), and an initial New Jersey teacher certification.
The CADP Program is offered as a full-time five-year program only. Undergraduate students who qualify for admission into the CADP Program are allowed to take up to three graduate courses (9 credit hours) that count toward both their BA degree and their MST degree. CADP students pay undergraduate tuition rates for these three graduate courses. In their +1 or 5th year, CADP students will transition to graduate students and take all of their education courses that lead to New Jersey teacher certification and their master’s degree in Teaching. A full-year (fall-spring semesters) of clinical internship (student teaching) is included in the +1 year, as required by the State of New Jersey’s Department of Education. All subject-specific coursework (English, Social Studies, Spanish, or Theatre) and state-mandated prerequisites must be taken prior to admission into the +1 year.
Rowan undergraduate students who wish to apply for admission to the CADP Program are required to have a face-to-face planning consultation with the CADP advisor, Ms. Melissa English Zachowski (englishme@rowan.edu). Students are advised to have this meeting early in their undergraduate program to ensure that they understand and meet all minimum requirements of this program for timely completion and graduation.
The New Jersey Department of Education (NJ DOE), not Rowan University, grants teacher certification based on requirements set by the state. While Rowan coursework for this program meets the academic requirements for NJ DOE certification, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all other certification requirements are met. NJ DOE certification requirements are subject to change. Certification applications are evaluated, by NJ DOE, based on the most current state requirements. Application Procedure
Entering freshmen, as well as current undergraduates and transfer students, may enroll as CADP students. The actual application for admission into the graduate portion of the program is facilitated by the undergraduate Subject Matter Education College of Education advisor, Ms. Nadia Rahin (rahin@rowan.edu). CADP students must meet a series of benchmarks as they progress from undergraduate to graduate status. The first benchmark occurs in the junior year when CADP students submit an application (before the March 31st deadline) to enroll in the three graduate courses that are part of the MST Program. CADP students must schedule regular face-to-face advising meetings with Ms. Rahin to ensure that they take the required certification prerequisite courses, meet their department’s requirements for their B.A. degree, and take and pass the required certification tests (Praxis Core and Praxis II) in order to enter the +1 year.
