Biography

Benita Kluttz-Drye serves as a Professor within the Interdisciplinary and Inclusive Education Department and as Professor In Residence for Cherry Street Elementary in Bridgeton NJ. Professor “KD”, as she is affectionately referred to by her students, teaches Differentiated Instruction, Characteristics of Knowledge Acquisition, and Diversity Seminar.  She is also is a field supervisor for both Elementary Education and Teachers of Students with Disabilities (TOSD).  Professor KD is currently a third-year doctoral student at Rowan University with a specialization in Special Education.  She is also an AACTE Holmes Scholar and serves on the National Executive Council for Holmes Scholars.    

Professor KD has over 25 years of experience in P-12 education and has taught at the Community College Level. Her credentials include certification as a Special Education Teacher General Curriculum (K-12), Special Education English, Special Education Math, Special Education Social Studies, Special Education Science, School Social Worker, Principal’s certificate and is highly qualified in K-6 and Middle School Math. 

Her professional experiences have allowed her to serve in various capacities within P-12 education including; Special Education Teacher for both resource and inclusive settings; Teacher Leader at the local and district level; and Chair of the Student Improvement team. Before coming to Rowan, Professor KD was an Exceptional Children’s Program Administrator for the district.  As an Exceptional Children’s Program Administrator, Professor KD was responsible for supervising and providing professional development for the special education teachers and schools within the 8 schools assigned to her. 

Professor KD plans to focus her research on the intersection of Urban Education and Special Education, specifically looking for ways to improve access, equity, and success for boys of color.  She hopes that the knowledge generated from her research will enable educators to adopt more inclusive pedagogies and from her research she hopes to develop a practical guide that can be used to successfully teach and impact all students.
