The Office of Clinical Experiences is dedicated to ensuring that all College of Education students receive field placements in school or clinical settings.   In addition, the office is responsible for supporting currently enrolled Rowan students applying for certification through the New Jersey State Department of Education. Below is a list of important information to make your placement success.

PLEASE NOTE: The approved counties for placement currently are Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem.

  • Background Clearance Requirement:  MANDATORY FOR ALL COLLEGE OF EDUCATION STUDENTS Due to recent changes in state regulations, most school districts now require criminal background clearances for students completing clinical (field) experiences at any level in their districts.  In order to ensure compliance, ALL education majors and minors MUST complete a New Jersey Department of Education Criminal Background Clearance in accordance with the College of Education’s established instructions and timelines (see below) prior to any clinical experience. No student will be permitted to begin a clinical practice or clinical experience placement without the appropriate NJ DOE criminal background clearance.  Failure to comply may result in a delay in the completion of your course sequence and graduation. Please read and follow the instructions carefully.

If you are registered for a course that requires a clinical (field) placement in this semester:

You must have your NJ DOE background clearance completed using the College of Education instructions no later than:

Spring Semester

December 1st*

Summer Semester

April 1st*

Fall Semester

August 1st*

*If you are placed in a district that requires the clearance prior to the posted deadlines, you will be notified via Rowan email and must comply with the district deadline.

  • Additional Requirements: You may be asked to complete additional requirements as specified by the district where you will be placed.  It becomes the student’s responsibility to comply with the requirements, including payment of all associated fees, within identified timeframes.  Failure to do so may result in a denial of placement and removal from the corresponding courses.
  • Transportation: Transportation to placement sites is the teacher candidate’s responsibility. It is recommended, when appropriate, that students consider developing carpools with fellow candidates.  Candidates should always plan ahead, arrive on time and allow enough time to park as well as follow any parking instructions by the school.
  • Accommodation Requests: Accommodation requests will be reviewed and considered upon providing appropriate supporting documentation as registered with Rowan University’s Academic Success Center specific to clinical experience (field) placements.  Accommodation requests  must be submitted via email to by April 1st for Fall and for October 1st Spring (If dates fall on a weekend, requests should be submitted by the next business day) for any clinical field other than the clinical practice year.  Accommodation requests for clinical practice year must be noted on the Tk20 application.
  • Placement Requests:  The Office of Clinical Experiences has established specific protocols and placement procedures with our district partners.  Students should not approach cooperating teachers, school staff or professors in an attempt to secure his/her own placement or his/her own supervisor for field experiences at any level.
