Biography

Dr. Kenzo Sung is an Assistant Professor in the Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Education Department.  He holds a Ph.D. in Education Policy and Social Cultural Studies in Education from the University of California at Berkeley, Ed.M. in Teaching and Learning from Harvard University, and B.A. in Integrative Biology from the University of California at Berkeley. 

Dr. Sung’s research areas include urban education and policy, ethnic studies, history of education, political economy, critical race theory, and twentieth century social movements and reforms.  His current research analyzes how the interplay of social movements, forces, and policies shaped urban schooling and communities since the 1960s U.S. War on Poverty, drawing from the cases of bilingual education, Head Start, racial desegregation, and school-to-work programs.  Dr. Sung’s new project comparatively examines the social and educational conditions in Camden, Bridgeton, and Philadelphia.  He also currently teaches and advises on a variety of topics to support new public leaders who think critically, educate effectively, research rigorously, and advocate forcefully to address the struggles of marginalized communities. 

Dr. Sung was previously a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Wellesley College and has been awarded funding from the Ford Foundation/National Academy of Sciences, Spencer Foundation, University of Cambridge, and Rockefeller Brothers Fund.  He published in journals including Race Ethnicity and Education, Peabody Journal of Education, and Children and Youth Service Review as well as chapters in Race and Urban Communities and Education and the Risk Society.  Dr. Sung is an affiliated faculty with U.C. Berkeley’s Center for Research on Social Change and won an “Outstanding Instructor Award” for U.C. Berkeley courses he taught in the departments of Education, History, and Ethnic Studies.

Dr. Sung’s interest in urban education and policy has been shaped by his years attending and teaching in urban public schools.  Prior to academia, Dr. Sung taught middle school in Oakland, CA for five years, during which time he also served as the school’s science department chair, co-wrote a $400,000 Model School Grant, and helped coordinate a district-wide science curriculum redesign for Oakland public schools.  Dr. Sung maintains involvement with several youth and community organizations, including most recently as a longstanding Board member for an East Oakland neighborhood non-profit organizing around education, gang violence, and human trafficking.
